What Happens When Evil Controls the Field

Evil is real; it has a pulsating rhythm, a heartbeat of its own. It's powerful chains stand ready to enslave people who thirst for power, whose God is greed, those to which vanity is the ultimate aphrodisiac. Evil beckons; promising to deliver if only you are willing to follow the darkness. Evil is seductive; luring those who feel the most powerless, who are most fearful of poverty, who feel they are the least desirable.

Evil is man made; it was never a part of our creation. It was man who shaped the image of a repulsive devil with horns and a tail; a hideous apparition with piercing eyes, holding chains to bind you to a soulless pursuit of carnage and despair. It was necessary; followers need a leader, and so a face was given to evil. Awful it was this dreadful devil; or luring beyond any seduction ever known. The supreme choice granted by our Creator is found at the door where evil dwells.
Is it harmless to follow evil, to dwell in darkness where one can find oh so many friends who challenge them to daring pursuits and treat them as though they matter? What's the harm in this? It is a sanctuary for people who feel like they are unwelcome in the society they crave to be accepted in. It is unnatural to embrace the spirit of evil; it requires an altered state of perception of right and wrong to become enmeshed and comfortable in darkness. All living creatures seek the light; even plants. Turn them in any direction and they grow to the light. It is the design of our Creator, because in the light we are empowered to receive the best of all that we embrace in our life journey.

Evil is a strange companion; such piercing eyes, yet it sees no foul. It looks away at child abuse or even sexual molestation of children. What's the harm? Sex sells, doesn't it? And money matters. Evil sees no harm in emotional abuse that scars the heart and damages the soul. People will get over it, right? It raises the bar for its followers; murder and mayhem just may be required to achieve the goal. The followers call this winning the game. Evil encourages its followers to instill fear; it is their weapon of choice. It requires a commitment and a support system, a group who will assuage any notion of a conscience or examination of their deeds in the light of day. It is a bad ass attitude that cloaks its malevolence in enticing things like 'casting a spell' on you. It is oh so exciting.

When evil controls the field complacency becomes a frequent companion. We read the papers and are no longer shocked or outraged at appalling acts. We lay it aside and say it happened again. Much like a beautiful marriage where the word divorce is suddenly spoken; it is shocking the first time. But say it enough and we no longer feel anything when we hear it. This has happened with child porn, child abuse, bullying, domestic violence, identity theft, and even banks, that used to be the sacred instrument of trust, now consigned to a sigh when we learn of another fraud or theft of the public's money and trust. Even worse is when we turn a blind eye or become complacent about murder and the most egregious crimes in our society. This is what happens when evil controls the field.

In all this darkness, it takes only the smallest light to illuminate the face of evil, to dispel fear, its most powerful weapon. Fear lives and breathes in the darkness; it is the cloak evil wears. When we champion those who are willing to call it out and battle it with truth and justice we bring the umpires back into the game. When no one is above our laws or beyond the reach of justice, when society refuses to avert our eyes and demands accountability from the offenders, we take back the field and restore humanity to a place where everyone matters. And the pursuit of winning this game suddenly begins to make sense; it is what humanity is called upon to do.
